Why Did Daily Dose of Sunshine Flop?

Daily Dose of Sunshine flop: Park Bo Young as Jung Da Eun

Daily Dose of Sunshine is one of Park Bo Young’s recently released series on Netflix. The series tackles issues of mental health and opens the viewers’ eyes to what goes on inside the minds of the patients, their loved ones, and the nurses in a psych ward.

The show came out on November 3, 2023, and had a total of 12 episodes. While many perceive the show to be a light-hearted series paired with Bo Young’s usual quirky and charming self, it necessarily doesn’t follow in the series.

Here’s why we think Daily Dose of Sunshine flopped and what Netflix should have done to improve its rankings.

Why Did Daily Dose of Sunshine Flop?

So let’s talk about why the show flopped.

First of all, the show came out at a time when avid Kdrama fans were waiting on a couple of episodes each for Castaway Diva and Strong Girl Nam Soon. These were already very strong shows, even though the latter doesn’t really have such a good story (sorry, fans).

And that’s only on Netflix. Disney+ also had Vigilante and The Worst of Evil going on. Meanwhile, Twinkling Watermelon also came out along with A Good Day to be a Dog.

We’re talking about a diverse number of shows that avid Kdrama fans have to keep an eye out for every single week. So this alone, was a big reason why DDoS flopped. Not too many people had the time to watch the show with everything else going on.

Another reason why DDoS did not gain as much traction is because the show got really heavy midway. Personally, I thought it was a light-hearted, comedy series that touched base on mental health. I did not expect the series of events that happened to Bo Young’s character (no spoilers here, promise!).

So while I wanted to watch the show in one go, it got really heavy for me and it affected my emotional health when I finished watching the show.

What Netflix Should Have Done

Don’t get me wrong– I loved Daily Dose of Sunshine. I believe it’s one of the best Kdrama shows released in 2023. I even think it’s so underrated and doesn’t deserve to be a flop. I wish there would be a second season but it might not do so given the show’s rankings.

In my observation, there were some things that Netflix should have done to improve the show’s rankings. Here goes:

Release Date

So again, DDoS came out at a time when there are so many good Kdramas airing. It would have been better if Netflix scheduled the show’s release before or after Castaway Diva or Strong Girl Nam Soon aired.

Episode Release

Another thing that Netflix did wrong was to drop all the episodes of Daily Dose of Sunshine in one go. Again, the show got really heavy real quick. It would have worked if Netflix released one or two episodes per week, just like they did with Castaway Diva and Strong Girl Nam Soon.

If Netflix did this, it would have been easier for viewers to watch the show in tidbits.

It’s really disappointing that DDoS did not reach as many people as it should have. If you still haven’t watched the show, please do so. It’s really eye-opening and heartwarming, especially to everyone taking care of a loved one.
