The Atypical Family Ending: How Viewers Want It to End

Jang Ki-Yong as Bok Gwi-Ju, Chun Woo-Hee as Do Da-Hae in The Atypical Family

The Atypical Family ending is coming up and we can’t help but hope that the show doesn’t leave us with a broken heart. After all, episode 9 hinted at someone dying soon. But we couldn’t just put our finger on who it would be.

So we’re back with another opinion piece in the hopes of dissecting what’s going to happen to the Bok (and Baek) family now that another Kdrama is coming to an end. Here’s what avid viewers hope will happen at The Atypical Family’s end.

Before we proceed, let us stop you right there. The section below contains spoilers so don’t proceed if you haven’t caught up with The Atypical Family‘s episodes (episode 10).

This is your final warning. We warned you.

Who’s Going to Die in The Atypical Family Ending?

By the end of episode 9, Bok Man-Heum (Ko Du-Shim) woke up in a frenzy. She heads to the nightclub where her husband, Eu Sun-Gu (Oh Man-Seok), is and throws a fit over her vision. She reveals to him that she dreamt Gwi-Ju (Jang Ki-Yong) was going to die.

In the short episode 10 preview that followed, viewers saw Baek Il-Hong (Kim Keum-Soon) getting mad at Gwi-Ju for not saving Do Da-Hae (Chun Woo-Hee) despite his powers. The preview also gives us a glimpse of Gwi-Ju standing over a bridge, crying. This confused viewers since they originally thought Gwi-Ju would die, according to Man-Heum’s vision.

By the time episode 10 came around, we knew the truth. Da-Hae faked her death in connivance with her uncle Noh Hyeong-Tae (Choi Kwang-Rok) so that Gwi-Ju would fall into another depressive state and be unable to use his powers to go back in time and save her from that building fire.

But thanks to I-Na (Park So-Yi), Gwi-Ju was able to find Da-Hae before Il-Hong could find her. In the previous episode, we also learned that Il-Hong had something planned for Da-Hae and the Bok family, so we don’t know yet what will happen when Il-Hong finds Da-Hae alive all this time.

Is Bok Gwi-Ju Going to Die?

This brings us to another possible death at the end of the Kdrama: Gwi-Ju’s.

In episode 9, Man-Heum dreamt that her son would be killed as he saves Da-Hae from the school fire in the past. But she later says that in her dream, they were all crying over an empty casket. This meant that Gwi-Ju’s body could be stuck in that past.

We certainly don’t want any deaths to happen (unless it’s Il-Hong’s) so we’re working hard to dissect this one and we might have found a loophole here.

While the preview of the succeeding episode gives us a clue that Gwi-Ju could die, we don’t believe so. As explained in the past, Gwi-Ju is unable to touch anything or be seen by anyone when he travels back in time. Only Da-Hae can see him in the past. Gwi-Ju can carry something to and from timelines but it has to be something he’s already holding.

With this logic, it doesn’t make sense that he will die in that fire or be crushed as the building collapses. Again, he tried to open the door to a shop in episode 10 when he wanted to warn Da-Hae about her upcoming accident. But when he tried to grab the door handle, a force would block him from it. If he were to get buried in that fire, it would be impossible since this force would stop anything from getting into contact with him.

Right now, we’re at a loss here. We don’t know what will happen to Gwi-Ju, but we’re hoping I-Na won’t lose him too!

Here’s what viewers think will happen to Gwi-Ju:

Will Bok Dong-Hee Get Married?

Claudia Kim as Bok Dong-Hee in The Atypical Family

In episode 9, Bok Dong-Hee (Claudia Kim) gets back with her cheating and manipulative fiance, Jo Ji-Han (Choi Seung-Yoon). Ji-Han only plans to get married to Dong-Hee so they can inherit the family’s building. In episode 10, Ji-Han accepts a phone call from another girl where he promises to give her a salad cafe in the building… while Dong-Hee is fitting wedding gowns in front of him.

After all her hard work, Dong-Hee has finally lost the weight she gained. Of course, she has gained a friend in Grace (Ryu Abel), who was supposed to be spying on her for Il-Hong. But after getting caught by Dong-Hee, she has a change of heart and helps Dong-Hee lose weight.

Instead of marrying Ji-Han, avid fans are hoping that Dong-Hee has a happy ending. Some are even shipping her and Grace!

On our side, we’re hoping these two will become friends. But we’re hoping Dong-Hee ends up with someone else: Hyeong-Tae, Da-Hae’s uncle in The Atypical Family. We’re already on episode 10 and they haven’t seen each other so we’re kinda hoping it will be love at first sight for the two of them.

Plus, have you seen Roy’s real appearance outside of the show? I mean… whew! He would be the perfect match for Claudia Kim!

What’s Going to Happen to the Bok Family?

At this point, we don’t know for sure what will happen at the ending of The Atypical Family. And that’s what we love about this Kdrama. It’s unpredictable, moving, and a light watch yet at the same time, its message speaks volumes! Plus, we love the chemistry between the two main leads and I-Na’s acting is just so heartwrenching for her age.

If you haven’t watched this Kdrama yet, you’re missing out on its message. We suggest to watch all the episodes when they become available.

In the meantime, here’s what avid fans are hoping:
